How do you think media will be dealt with by law in future?

I think in the future media will perhaps be changed to now enhance the likes of taking drugs maybe on the basis that it is shown to be as if the use of drugs can be good getting that high experience and shown in Human Traffic. I think there could be possibly limitations on how far the media can go showing these types of subjects on the use of drugs and alcohol etc.

How can Human Traffic be a metaphor for the effects model and gratifications model of media?

The effects model is the hypodermic model. This sees the audience as duped and doped. Media is the opium of the masses and suggests that it can hypnotise the populace. The gratifications model is power to the people. Audiences can create subversive and deviant readings other than those intended by institutions of production. Texts are used to gratify needs and interests. Human Traffic is a metaphor for both the models because of the use of drugs. Human Traffic shows the audience that the use of drugs can give you such an experience and confidence boost, an example of this from the film is the characters mentioning they can talk to complete strangers about anything and everything this statement fits in with the effects model because the audience can believe that taking drugs for the experience is ok but in the film its not until after the use of these substances it is shown how the dangerous side of how they can effect you after use, having that low down feeling and not so great. Human traffic can be a metaphor to the gratifications model, which is subversive readings other than those intended by institutions; which could mean in this case the idea of drug use can be over thrown and can be looked at as an ok thing to do and over throw the dangers of taking drugs, just the positives things of why the characters should take drugs are shown.

Human Traffic

There are close up shots of the characters to show the negatives of being drunk and how it affects their behaviour around others.

The characters in the film have been shown to take drugs and how this affects their behaviour, in this case they feel they can talk to complete strangers sharing anything they want with them and they get the sense of feeling more confident. This still has a negative effect on the audience and they can clearly see what the result through taking drugs.

A moral that the audience could gain from viewing Human Traffic is not to drink to much alcohol and do not take drugs as the audience can see the characters had a great time on plenty of alcohol and drugs but when the party has finished you hit a terrible low down feeling and feel extremely rubbish and once you are addicted it is hard to stop also whilst on the booze and drugs what can possibly happen when you are experiencing a high; you don’t really have a control over yourself you go with the flow and things can lead from on thing to another. So the moral could be do not take drugs and exceed the limits of drinking to much alcohol.

The film can be considered to be British by the locations in the film, they are all set in Britain, in Cardiff and the film was directed by Welsh director Justin Kerrigan. Also another point is that most of the actors are English except Lorraine Pilkington who is Irish but this point can make the film be considered as a British film.

The scene I am analysing from Human Traffic is part 8 at 1:10 minutes in the clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KgWEeQNlrY
The shot type in this scene is a low angled shot with the camera looking up at them from below the glass table. We can see that on the table is a white, powdery substance so automatically the audience knows that it is a drug and the character using his credit card dividing it up equally for him and the other character who is smoking. It is as if the audience are looking up to them perhaps to show that the characters know what they are doing taking drugs, drinking etc and the possibilities that can happen. Also with a low angled shot the audience can see what they are doing, the facial expressions through this type of shot where as if they had chosen a different shot it might not have the same effect and the audience wouldn’t be able to see what the points I have just mentioned above. The audience can clearly see what they are doing is illegal but they can see that the characters do not have a care in the world and that in this particular scene the friendship between these to characters is strong and appears they do most things together, experiencing it together.

Updated Storyboard

This is our updated storyboard now including which lyrics go with which shot.

Human Traffic

Human Traffic

Do you think Human Traffic encourages or glorifies drug use?

I think in certain scenes Human traffic does encourage drug use because the audience can view the amount of fun they have as a group of friends and strangers that they can socialise with that they wouldn’t normally do when not under the influence of drugs. The audience can clearly see how much fun they can have, an the confidence boost they experience when clubbing and partying anywhere, they experience such a high and the group of friends Human Traffic presents to the audience shows they do it together as a group and experience the same fun and feelings as each one of them do, they go through it all together. From the points I have mentioned above I think this British film does encourage drug use to the audience and not so much glorifies it.

Theory – Effects model
The hypodermic model. This sees the audience as duped and doped. Media is the opium of the masses and suggests that it can hypnotise the populace.

The theory I have mentioned above fits in with the encouragement of the use of drugs and how it can be an experience as shown by the characters.

Example A2 Music video

The video embedded above is an example of an A2 music video that myself and my group watched to look at the style of the video how well the lyrics and visuals fit together and the style of the music chosen. In this video some of the visuals we saw are similar to the way we have wrote our script and intend to soon film those visuals are a character sitting on her bed looking at old memories of her and someone else in black and white photographs covering some of her bed. We have a similar part in our script where our character Danii is looking at her photographs on her bed which is similar to that in our example A2 music video.

Suggested props

The following props have been suggested by our group which we may want to include in the image for various reasons:
- obviously the filming equipment such as a camera tripod etc
- a locket which will be one of the main focus points of the clip
- photo frame with a picture of the mother and daughter inside which we will zoom on within the video
- clothing for the actors but that will be the basics and a black dress for our singer to create that Alicia Keys look that we feel the song fits
- selection of images which be be located in the bedroom

Suggested costumes

This blanket is being used in the music video for the mother to wear to get across to the audience she is seriously ill.

The black dress is for Carly Jones our artist to wear when singing in the studio to make her look a full time, professional singer.

The rest of the characters in our music video will be wearing similar costumes to this example of tops and jeans etc more casual clothing to be worn.

Cast List

Dannii Hall as the female child

Sam Hall as her mother

Extras as other family members

Carly Jones as herself

The main character in our music video will be Dannii hall and the story about her mother and any other extras would be family members and the last character shown in our music video is Carly Jones our artist which will include shots of her singing in the studio.

Skills Development

With a digital video camera you are able to film anything of your choice interior or exterior to produce any recording or a film or music video for all types of genres. Throughout my experience of filming so far I have gained a few recording techniques including various types of software I can extend the sound or slow it down or speed it up depending on the video footage and what is to be done.

Digetic and non digetic sound can be faded into one another to create a smooth change over in sound. An example of a piece of software I have used is Final cut express through using this I developed several skills including; importing certain parts of the recorded footage and watching frame by frame and how you are able to watch videos simultaneously that can be edited and viewed at the same time.

I have learnt how to capture a video from the camera and experimented with footage and the effects Final cut had to offer and enhanced the general quality of the video. During the production of our thriller opening we used a digital camera to photograph actors/actresses and locations etc. and preparation before our filming we documented and took any pictures needed with a digital camera.

Throughout the tasks I have been given I have developed and enhanced my production skills; I have mainly learnt how to be more creative using the camera and make use of all available equipment; using different camera shots and angles and using the software to edit the final footage and the many effects we can use to enhance the final product.

Using the software an advantage was there were a range of effects we could use to add to the footage to improve quality and the storyline I was able to experiment with all these effects and if a certain part I wasn’t happy with and it wasn’t right you can soon undo and take the effect out. A disadvantage of using the software was trying to get the timings of putting together the visuals and sounds together they had to be spot on using the timeline provided and also capturing the footage was difficult at times too.

At AS I think we were creative in some aspects; we used a range of different shots and some effects were added to the footage but I think we could have been a bit more creative. I feel our script was creative and we really considered and discussed as a group our task and thriller opening.

During the research and planning of our thriller opening we firstly used primary research we watched other thriller openings looking at the style and the footage in detail and secondary research using the internet I researched a few companies that produced thriller films.

If we were to do this task again I would improve choosing the actors/actresses more carefully as this was a problem we encountered during filming and try to be more organised with our planning e.g. exact dates of filming and getting the documentation all completed ready to move on to the next stage.

I used the internet to research companies producing thrillers and watching examples of thrillers on You tube gaining ideas and styles of thriller films. During the editing of our footage we tried to use as many of our free lessons and spare time to get as much editing done as possible in a short space of time so if there were problems or adjustments we had time to edit them and move on.

The techniques we used in our footage were basic which included different transitions between shots; cut, fade and dissolve from one shot to the next and adding titles and credits in with effects on the writing e.g. scrolling up the screen.

My evaluation I embedded the video onto my blog and then uploaded my presentation of my evaluation onto Slide Share then placing the link onto my blog, I feel to improve my evaluation and make it stronger I can include more pictures and evidence to back my points up making my case stronger. We researched conventions of a thriller film then looking at what we had researched and then included some of the conventions in the script to make it known to the audience it was a thriller film, conventions included; blood and gore, screaming scenes with low lighting at points and tense music building suspense. When filming we tried to include as many as the conventions as possible to make it a very good thriller opening.

Task 3

I am doing a case study on the music channel and its audience, the music channel I have chosen to research is Viva.

Viva is a music and entertainment channel that is a unique mix of award winning comedy, the best in rock and pop music. Viva is a new channel from MTV. Viva will also offer the very best in music but now with a fresh, fun blend of comedy, reality and fantastic new programming. Viva replaced TMF (The Music Factory) on 26th October 2009 everyday the new music channel will show case the hottest new released singles with the official charts UK including top names hosting the shows. The channel is owned by MTV networks Europe and is originally a German channel. The first music video to be shown on VIVA was Alphabeat’s “The Spell” in the official UK chart show top 20. The channel features some of the world’s biggest names on the shows in interviews and hosting the shows themselves. The website is cool and funky and it is clear through the music channel and their website that this channel aims at an audience of teenagers and young adults because it hosts the new singles and update to date newly released songs. The website has been tailored to suit their audience through having links available to e.g. check the charts with music videos so the audience are able to view and keep track of the charts online. Use of colour has been used to appeal to their audience; bright and cool colours of pink and green have been used with a stylish font that looks cool and young.

Below is an image of Viva's website and how it appeals to their audience and the elements they include and use to attract their audience.

Here are both the logos from MTV and Viva even though MTV own Viva there are no comparisons between the two logos, they are both very different from one another.
