Final design of my digipak

The design below is my final design of my digipak having created a initial draft then receiving feedback which I used to create my final design. The CD will also have the image of the lips on it but so when it is placed back into the digipak it will continue the image of the lips.

Proposal

Our final proposal is the scenes we plan on filming mentioned in the filming schedule. The genre of our music video is narrative and through the visuals and lyrics the audience can understand the story. We will be filming in various locations mentioned on the schedule making use of certain props needed for the scenes. We will be using a variety of shots to create various effects for the audience which has been said in more detail on the post "shot list". Our music video is also Pop and soul which will be aimed at our target audience of teenagers to young adults and also one of characters would be of similar age to some of our target audience so they could associate and understand her emotions better.

Shot lists

Below is the type of shots and transitions we can include in our music video:

Close - up shot - this will show the audience the emotions of the character(s) and allows the audience to try and think how they think and feel in that situation they can try and understand thier emotions.
Wide angle shot - allows the audience to see the location of the scene and can gain an idea of the story line and an understanding of what is going on.

Over the shoulder shot - so the audience can see what the character is looking at and can see it from their perspective.

Zoom out and in - this can help to show something important especially when zooming in on something as it is something in particular that is being shown therefore important and the audience can clearly see this.

Cut from shot to shot - this is another transition that we can use especially if the pace of the song becomes quicker the shots can easily be changed from one to another using cut.

Panning - this allows the audience to seem as if they are actually there witnessing what is happening in a chosen scene helping them understand the storyline.

Fade in and out - this usually is a good transition to use between shots that are very simialar to each other or to bring in the first shot/scene at the beginning or fade the last scene out to black at the ending of the music video.

From the music videos that I have analysed all of them have included some of the shots and transitions above which made them effective and mainly helped the audience to understand the story and emotions of characters.

Defining our target audience

The target audience we are aiming at for our music video is teenagers to young adults who enjoy listening to music with a genre of Pop and also a music video that is narrative based.

Research of a similar artist

The music video I have chosen to analyse that is similar to our music video is Alicia Keys “if I aint got you” released February 2004. The video begins with a piano solo piece lasting around twenty four seconds of the artist playing which is the same start as our music video then changing shots of her playing the piano to two people one being the artist the other presumably her boyfriend moving to a new house together. Throughout the video shots change back to Alicia Keys playing the piano and then returning to the narrative of the story shots. The lyrics fit in well with the visuals as it is clear that she only wants that one person and doesn’t need anything at all. She then gets upset after she finds out her boyfriend has been arrested and messes their new home up by throwing and tearing papers up which is another thing in common with our music video where as our character is sitting on the bed looking at photos and pushes them off the bed but both characters have similar anger and upset.

I think the target audience of Alicia keys is a target audience who is young or middle – aged as the genre of her music is R & B, soul and pop which is aimed at more young people but also some middle - aged people who enjoy listening to soul music. I think linking the target audience to her album work is a key element. I also feel the covers have been designed to let the audience know what type of genre her music is and to make sure the covers are eye – catching and appealing to her target audience.

Below are four examples of her album work. All her front covers include herself posing some are of close up shots like the album “As I am” but the rest remain of medium shots. All her album except the diary of Alicia Keys include her name in bright bold font and colour to stand out from the background and appeal to the target audience and just underneath in smaller size and different font is the album name. I think all the shots on each cover relate to the name of the album for example the album ”the element of freedom” it appears to look like she is wearing wings which to me relates to the word freedom as if flying etc. Another album “As I am” is of a close - up shot of Alicia Keys face which relates to who and what she is.

Digipak - First Draft

Below is my first draft of my digipak. The bottom right is the front cover, the bottom left is the back cover and would include song names written to the left of the artist and the top is the insert with the CD on the right hand side and the left would be an insert for a leaflet containing artist information and the song lyrics which would have the same front and back covers that the digipak has to keep the consistent image. The images I have used I took of my friend as the artist was not available to do a photo shoot becuase of certain circumstances, so as a first draft I took some photos of my friend and would do similar shots to these for my final digipak but of Carly. I edited the photos I took of my friend so that it was just her on a solid background for both front and back covers. I also took a photo of lips and using Adobe Photoshop edited them by inverting the colour.

Feedback:
- The lips should be of similar contrast to the front and back covers and at the moment the contrast is very much different.
- Perhaps the background instead of being a solid grey it could fade in from one colour to another.
- The artist name is clear, easy to read font that stands out from the cover.
- The font style of the digipak name "reason to smile" is appropriate and can be read easy.
- Perhaps try a different ground possibly an open landscape.

Having read through my feedback I have already experimented with one of the ideas being the colour of the lips, again using Adobe Photoshop I have edited them so that they are of similar contrast to the existing digipak, as shown below using different layers and changing the brightness and contrast.

Below is an improved digipak draft of the new image of the lips.

The inside of the digipak will have the CD on the right and it will also have the lips on it so when it is placed in the digipak it will carry the image on of the lips. On the left hand side of the digipak will be an insert of a booklet which will contain a message and the background of the artist and with the lyrics of the songs on the CD the insert will be the same as the front and back covers of the digipak. On the back side of the digipak there is a spare space on the left hand side of the artist which has been left to list the tracks on the digipak.

Examples of Digipaks

Below are some examples of Digipaks including my thoughts and how they work well and promote the single.

The above digiapak is from the female artist Madonna. On the front in bright bold writing is her name with the "O" being a small world and just below is the title "The confessions tour" the tour was worldwide from America to Europe hence the image on the back of the digipak of the world with the featured songs on CD and that are also available on DVD format, with a dark black background and light colours in the font allows the digipak to be eye - catching and appeal to its target audience.
The above digipak is of Lady Gaga and her digipak named "The fame". The front cover is a close up shot of her face wearing sunglasses which on the left hand side have been coated with diamond jewels which relates to the word fame and on the right hand side the word written. The elements all combine together to relate to the song name. The use of contrast makes the digipak stand out and appealing.

This digipak is of Britney Spears with the song "hold it against me" The style of the writing definitely fits in with the name of the song and the photo of Britney Spears I personally thinks fits in with the song name because of her pose and the way she holds her head on her hands. Using the photo of just her as a background is a good idea, the image itself is light and with the black writing this would most definitely stand out.

Above is a digipak of Alicia Keys with "Greatest Hits" with many of her tracks that have done well in the charts and have no all been put on one disc. The image of Alicia Keys as the background looks good and consumers can clearly see it is her CD. I particularly like the font of the words "greatest gift" as it has got a nice free flow to it.

Above is a digipak by American artist Rihanna with the single "good girl gone bad". The front cover is basic but effective a dark background with the light around her body which makes it appealing of the light and dark contrast. The artist name is in capital letters which makes it bold and underneath in small lower case letters is the name of the single. The overall design of the front cover is effective and would be eye - catching and appealing to its target audience.

Conclusion

All the digipaks I have discussed above have several things in common on the font cover

- Image of the artist

- Name of artist is in capital letters

- Name of single is in lower case

From the elements above all of these digipaks are effective and would appeal to their target audience and I think I will need to take into account the elements I have mentioned above so that my digipak also is eye - catching and appealing and is effective relating to the song name and its lyrics.

Digipaks

Digipaks are a type of compact disc packaging. Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD attached to the inside. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. They flip open like a book, or it can have several parts so one side opens the opposite way to the other side with the CD in the centre.

Digipaks were created by MeadWestvaco, as it digipaks become more popular and was begun to be used by many manufacturers the digipak then was used to be described as all soft CD packaging.

The image below is example of digipaks, which includes mostly graphics on each side and an insert for the CD to be placed into. A digipak is usually for a single rather than an album. The name of the single and artist is on the front cover and on the inside is usually an inner sleeve which contains a booklet on the artist and information about them.

The image below is an illustration/structure of a digipak and from what I have mentioned above on the other examples of digipaks becomes clear what goes on which side.

Lady Gaga - Love Game

What is the relationship between the lyrics and visuals?

The word “love” is written on a mans head at the beginning of the song and also the word “fame” on another mans head representing the song name except the word fame is instead of game to represent her album. “Have some fun” the relationship between these lyrics and the visuals is Lady Gaga is teasing the men around her in a circle and having some fun in doing this. “Touching ya” when these lyrics are sung the men around Lady Gaga on the train all touch her and run their hands down her body.

What is the relationship between the music and visuals?

The shots change on the beat to the song and as the beat in the song speeds up the shot changes tend to become quicker.

Are there close ups of the artist and star image motifs?
As shown above there are several close – ups of Lady Gaga throughout the music video, these are mainly to show her make up and features on her face like the diamonds on the side (above) to the audience.

Is there reference to the notion of looking?
Voyeuristic treatment of female body (Lady Gaga) - all the men are watching her as she dances around and teases them – having fun. There are many times Lady Gaga looks into the camera which relates to the theory of Mulvey's theory claiming that male characters are "bearers of the look" which is aimed - far more often than not - at physically desirable, sexually submissive female characters the reason for looking into the camera.

Are they any intertextuals references?

An intertextual reference I have found; at the end of the music video - Lady Gaga is wearing gloves a similarity to that of Michael Jackson wearing a glove perhaps trying to make the same personal feature of a symbol relating to certain things who of which she has been influenced by. Another intextual reference I have found is that all of Lady Gaga's music videos all make use of strange and unusual costumes and usen of features placed on her face all the way from her first single "Just Dance" 2008 to her current single "Alejandro" 2010.

Is the music video performance, narrative or concept – based?

The music video of Lady Gaga, Love Game is more performance based, because they appears to be a constant dance routine from start to finish of accurate moves being executed in time with the songs beat.
Conclusion
From answering the questions above I have found out the different elements that are considered when making a music video so that it suits its target audience and appeals to them and the way in which they are used to do so.

Our House

Madness - Our House
Released in November 1982, it peaked at number 5 in the UK singles chart and was their biggest hit in the United States, reaching number 7 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. The music video depicts the band acting out the song's lyrics. Their costumes are old fashion and all are wearing hats except the lead singer who is smart but casual clothing. The song's lyrics mostly describe the daily activities in the house, with some of the band portraying the "family" oner of the members are dressed as a women showing sterotypically women stay at home to cook and clean through the costume he was wearing making it comical. The video cuts between scenes of the "family", the band playing in a living room, and exterior shots of various other houses including Buckingham Palace.
Kid British - Our house is Dadless
This is a re - edited version of Our house re - named Our house is Ddless includes characters of different ethnic origins and is more to do with social realism which depicts the location and social life they live around. Our house is Dadless released 2009, made number 63 in the UK single charts.
