I have evaluated three music videos by a female artist, a male artist and an all boy band. Kelly Rowland performing Commander, Mc Hammer performing U cant touch this both American artists and a British boy band The Wanted performing All time low. Looking at the female and male artists we can see how gender has been represented in each of the music videos. In Commander music video Kelly Rowland is on sexual display through the use of camera work, costume, make-up and dance as mentioned in more detail in my essay but through these elements she appears to be on sexual display where as Mc Hammer doesn’t appear to be on sexual display so I feel gender plays a role in how the video can be styled using the elements I have mentioned. Here we can see how gender is represented between the female and male artist and how Kelly is on display where as Mc Hammer isn’t as much. Now comparing the two American artists with the British boy band I have studied we can clearly see the difference of style between the two. The two American artists have very upbeat songs with many stylish dance moves where as The Wanted have an upbeat song, slow pace to begin with but they sung with a lot more emotion, concentrating on emphasizing the lyrics making them more realistic with less dance moves. From what I have mentioned above we can see how gender has been represented and also the different styles between the American artists and the British band.

Our selected song
This is our selected song for our music video performed by our artist Carly Jones.
Reason to smile Just words Just Logic
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
How can you describe your sight
to someone whose never seen
Impossible, like trying to feel
when you're numb from head to toe
Like chasing the universe
No awareness of space or time
like trying to describe
when my heart is racing faster than the speed of light
[Chorus]
Why should I have to have a reason to smile
Why should I have to have a reason... to smile
[Verse 2]
So confused
taking pieces from different puzzles
time passes by, like any other day
language of the soul
music to me
close up faded dots..
step back and take the picture in
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Letters from the words. words from the sentence
Sentence from the page, a chapter in the book
Running over the logic again in my head
It doesn't make sense. The story ends.
[Chorus]

Example of our artist Carly Jones
The link below is an example of our artist; Carly Jones singing Reason to smile/Just words, Just logic. I feel her music is aimed at an older generation. Carly sings the lyrics with a lot of meaning and emotion bringing the lyrics to life making them more realistic. The music is at a slow pace which most definitely suits her voice, Carly’s music would sell well to an audience who prefer and enjoy listening to music that is calm, relaxing and very soothing allowing them to let there thoughts run free.

First I looked at “Empire state of mind” by Alicia Keys, this influenced us as the music and lyrics are similar to the ones in which our artist writes. When we first came across Carly we found her on www.wohomusic.net a music social network and website where users are able to listen to music online, find gigs and chat with artists, bands and fans from all over the world. We listened to the songs she sung however they we all traditional songs from well known artists around the country e.g. Florence and the machine – Howl. We could not use any of these song as we were asked to find an artist who has written there own music and lyrics. Myself and my group then went and spoke to Carly and asked her if she writes her own music and with luck on our side she does. When I first listened to her music it reminded me of Alicia Keys - Empire state of mind, just because of the tune and particular lyrics. We were extremely happy when Carly agreed to sing for us as we can do a photo shoot for the album cover and promotion of the song and make our music video performance based.
Initial Ideas
• From hearing her style of music I really have a image in my head of her playing on a dark stage with nothing else around her bar a piano.
• Dress code – Black dress, very formal. The aim is to get look of a professional artist.
• We have spoken to a make-up artist and we have also spoken to a hair stylist, they have both agreed and are willing to help us through our music video.
• The location we have looked at is in the high school with the piano however the piano is NOT on the stage so we are using the recording music room with a long board placed around the room with a black sheet with small lights coming through which makes the scene looks more sophisticated and will make the scene more calm and will make Carly stand out.
• However this may change depending on how Carly feels as we want her to feel as comfortable as possible e.g. she may not want to sing live she may want to lip sync.
• Another problem is we don’t want our music video to be boring so after hearing her song and analyzing the lyrics we will then decide whether we need more of a narrative based than performance.
